Stop the presses(servers?, ... whatever)!

Are "sound-byte doctrines" and "drive-by doctrines" the same thing or is there a difference?

Thank you for a fabulous entry.

Really well put.

Leaving a person when they are in their greatest time of need, their greatest spiritual vulnerability, etc., is antithetical of what we should do, what Christ would have done - what He would have us do. We need to forget about ourselves more often.

Thanks so much for this reminder.

Okay, so I am going to add a touch of humor to this post. I hope that is okay. Humor as in laughing at me, as usual...

About a year ago I was a YW leader so I really care about the girls in our ward. After reading this post yesterday I had a dream that Nikki, a girl that just graduated, and another YW were both pregnant. And they were excited about it. I woke up really upset!

I'm way too easily influenced!!! You think????

I'm a YW leader, and have had to deal with a YW getting pregnant. I agree with what has been said. This is the time when you most love the girl! Anybody who has grown up in the church (or just with Christianity) is already going to be weighed down with unbelievable guilt at the action. Us telling them they were bad won't help the situation now. My policy is definitely to give the girl all the support she'll need during this very trying time, and to emphasize one lesson above all: God loves you, no matter what.

And give me a break. Tracy Strauss? Why don't they leave the semi-untalented actress playing a psychopath alone, and focus on her adorable son, who is the only actual real Hero in the show? Lol. Oh dear. I sense a rant coming. I'll just stop there.

Dang it, I was hoping the prize was an Onslow wife-beater with matching hat. I wanted to give it to my husband for Christmas. :) LOL, what a great show. We've watched it soooo many times. :)

You know, I'm 30 years old, have always been active LDS and I don't think I've EVER been to a baby shower, except for my sister-in-law's this past spring because she was, after all, giving birth to my brother's baby. Crazy, eh? I wonder, actually, how I managed that.

@TFD - Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner. Yes, that reference comes from Keeping Up Appearances. Unfortunately, you don't win anything, though.

I think that the most prevalent example of what I'm talking about is the "unwed mother baby shower" like you referenced. I think anyone would be be exhausted after 8 relatively close baby showers, unwed mother or not....

"A guy named Tarquin who makes his own curtains?" I know I've heard of that guy before. Are you as big a fan as I am of "Keeping Up Appearances" with Mrs. Bucket? :)

The Laurel with a bun in the oven is a scenario that my home ward knows all to well. Except it wasn't just the Laurels. It was also the Mia "Maids" and perhaps even a Beehive. Once the ward was up to around the 8th pregnancy out of wedlock, some of the RS sisters were starting to get ticked off about baby showers being thrown for these girls. I have to say, I sort of agreed with them and can understand their disgust. And yet, at the same time, making these girls feel welcome at church and among the sisters, despite their obvious, protuding mistake, was probably what led to the reactivation of a handful of them. A couple of them totally turned their lives around, two I can think of are now married in the temple to great guys. If they had felt "punished" by all the individual sisters in RS, I doubt that they would have ever wanted to set foot in church again. As well, when it comes to a pregnancy, every child should be considered a blessing, even when the circumstances under which it was conceived is lamentable. I think perhaps we should celebrate what these girls DID to right: that they didn't just try to erase their mistake by having an abortion.

No bonus points for me. :(

But I have to say that it's very easy to fall prey to sound-byte doctrine.

*sigh*

Lots more banging around my mind about this post that I'd comment on, but I'm just too distracted this AM.
