Here is a glossary of terms that you may come across on this site that you may be unfamiliar with.  Some come from the Mormon community, some from the gay community, and some come from the gay Mormon community.  If you have any suggestions for additions to this list, contact me.

BISEXUAL
Someone attracted members of their own sex and members of the opposite sex.  (See also “Lindsay Lohan”.)

BISHOP
The ecclesiastical leader of a ward.

BLOGGERNACLE
A combination of the words “Blogger” and “Tabernacle” used to refer to the blogs on the Internet that deal with Mormonism and Mormon culture.

BREEDER
Semi-offensive term used by gays to refer to straight people (particularly parents).  Think “cracker” in level of offensiveness and made-up-ness.

THE CHURCH
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

FAG
Kind of like the “N” word in complexity.  Can be see as very offensive when used by a straight person to refer to a gay person, but is often used among gay people themselves to refer to something/someone particularly “gay”.  Some people view it as always offensive.  Stay away from it until you really know what you are doing.

FAG-HAG
A woman that is has a lot of male gay friends.  (See also “Madonna”.)

GAY
(See Homosexual.  See Jane.  See Homosexual Want To Hang Out With Jimmy Instead of Jane.)

GENDER CONFUSION
A term whose usage is the bane of my existence.  Commonly used (inaccurately) as a synonym for homosexuality, it more accurately describes a transgender individual.

HOMORMON
A word that I made up.  It’s dumb.

HOMOSEXUAL
Someone who is attracted members of their own sex and apparently the only group of people that know that cut off jeans shorts should not make a comeback.

IN QUIET DESPERATION
Influential gay Mormon book written by the Fred and Marilyn Mathis and Ty Mansfield.  In it, the Mathis’ write about their son Stuart, a gay Mormon, who committed suicide.  In the second half of the book, Mansfield chronicles his journey as a faithful, gay member of the Church.

LAW OF CHASTITY
Church rule that prohibits all “below the belt”-type activities between people that aren’t married to each other (same-sex marriages don’t count).  You can’t marry yourself, so guess what else is out.  Yep.  That, too.  And don’t even think about porn.  Really.

LAW OF TITHING
Ten percent of your income goes (in little gray envelopes) to the Church.

LDS
Acronym for “Latter-day Saint” used to refer to a member of or something related to “The Church”.

LESBIAN
A gayette.

MOHO
A slang term for a gay Mormon.  It comes from blending the words Mormon and Homosexual.  (Clever, huh?)  Often the term implies a gay Mormon that is faithful to the teachings of the Church by living celibate or married to a member of the opposite sex.  Can also refer to a motor home.

MOHOSPHERE
The groups of blogs on the internet that focus on or are written by gay Mormons.  I’m not sure if anyone other than me actually uses this one.

MORMON
Slang term used to indicated a member of or something related to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Is a reference to The Book of Mormon.

OPPOSITE SEX ATTRACTION
A term sometimes used by gay Mormons to refer to straightness.

OSA
(See “Opposite Sex Attraction”)

QUEER
Synonym for gay.  Can sometimes be offensive.  It is all about how it is used with this one.

QUEEROSPHERE
A term for the group of blogs focusing on gay Mormons that is actually a word that people use and not something that I made up.  (Courtesy Samantha)

SAME GENDER ATTRACTION
Most often used term in Church literature for someone sexually attracted to members of their own sex.

SAME SEX ATTRACTION
Often used as a synonym for Same Gender Attraction.

SEX
Ask your parents.

SINGLES WARD
A Mormon congregation populated almost entirely by single people age 18-31.  (See also “Meat Market”.)

SSA
(See “Same Sex Attraction”)

SGA
(See “Same Gender Attraction” or “Student Government Association”)

STAKE
A grouping of wards.  Based on geography and population.

STAKE PRESIDENT
Ecclesiastical leader in charge of a stake.

TEMPLE RECOMMEND
A card that shows that the carrier has been interviewed by the Stake President and has been found to meet the minimum requirements of worthiness (Law of Chastity, Law of Tithing, Word of Wisdom, etc.) to enter the temple.

TRANSGENDER
Someone who feels that their true gender is not correctly manifested in their physical body.  While related to homosexuality, it is not synonymous with it.

WARD
A Mormon congregation.  Usually determined by geography and population.

WHITE-KNUCKLING
Avoiding strong temptation primarily by abstaining of undesired behaviors – often without any other supporting method.  Specifically refers when someone holds onto something so hard that their hands become discolored.

YOUR MOM
The subject of half of my jokes.
